The Gorizia Camino is a cross-border pilgrimage and hiking trail connecting important historical, cultural and religious centres in Friuli Venezia Giulia and the Gorizia area.
The route begins in Aquileia, one of Europe’s most important early Christian centres, and ends at Holy Mountain (Sveta Gora) near Nova Gorica, one of Slovenia’s most important Marian pilgrimage sites. Along the way, the trail passes through Sagrado and continues to the Peace Monument in Cerje and Miren Castle, before reaching Gorizia and Piazza Transalpina, where visitors can discover a rich heritage of religious and cultural landmarks. The route is approximately 80 kilometres long and is divided into four daily stages.
The Gorizia Camino aims to connect the shared historical and spiritual heritage on both sides of the border. It offers visitors the opportunity to discover places that have played an important role in the development of Christianity, pilgrimage traditions and European culture over the centuries. At the same time, it promotes sustainable tourism, cross-border cooperation and the exploration of the region’s natural and cultural heritage. The crossing of the Slovenian-Italian border gives the route a special symbolic significance. Once a border that separated the people of the two cities for decades, it is today a place of encounter, cooperation and a shared European identity.
