Gorizia Castle is the ancient heart of the city. Perched on a hill above Gorizia, it offers a spectacular panoramic view of the town and its surroundings.

Its origins date back to the 11th century, though it has been remodelled many times — with bastions and towers added over the centuries, serving various purposes such as an administrative centre, a military barracks, and even a prison. The castle was bombed during World War I, but careful restoration work begun in the 1930s restored its appealing medieval appearance.
